Partial Dentures – The Missing Pieces in a Dental Puzzle

Many patients are familiar with crown and bridge treatments that replace between 1 and 3 consecutive teeth. Full dentures replicate a complete upper or lower arch – but for patients missing several nonconsecutive teeth, the solution may not be as well-known. At East Islip Dental Care, our team provides these patients with partial dentures, often referred to simply as partials, to replace any number of consecutive and nonconsecutive missing teeth without damaging your remaining dental structure.

How Partials Work

1. Patients are examined by our dental team to determine if their remaining teeth are healthy and stable.

2. Impressions are taken of the patients’ bite and sent to our dental lab.

3. Skilled ceramists craft a unique partial denture – custom replacement teeth bonded to a gum-like base.

4. The unique partial denture is returned to East Islip Dental Care to be placed.

5. The partial denture fills in gaps left by missing teeth like a puzzle piece, locking firmly in place using clips or brackets.

Full Dentures Islip Relies on for Beautiful Smiles

Patients who are missing all the teeth on their upper or lower arch are at risk for malnutrition, have difficulty speaking clearly, and quickly begin to show signs of facial structure deterioration. Full dentures replace either the upper or lower arch of teeth or both arches with a dental prosthetic that attaches via suction or using dental adhesive to restore smiles.

How Dentures Work

1. Edentulous patients are examined by our team to ensure gum and jawbone health.

2. Impressions are taken of the patient’s bite as well as measurements to indicate the appropriate size and shape for their dental prosthetic.

3. Ceramists use these impressions and measurements to recreate a patient’s smile, setting replacement teeth into a gum-like base.

4. East Islip Dental Care receives the dental prosthetic, and patients return to have their dentures fitted snugly.

5. Once dentures are fitted, they should receive routine care and reshaping at our office.

Implant-Supported Dentures or Partials

For patients who want a versatile, durable, and permanent tooth loss solution, implant-supported full or partial dentures are ideal. This tooth replacement option restores not just the visible parts of teeth, but the root of the tooth as well.

How Implant-Retained Dentures Work

1. Patients visit our office for a thorough examination of any remaining teeth, gum tissue, and jawbone density with a skilled periodontist or oral surgeon.

2. If we determine that dental implants are a good option, we will plan the optimum location for dental implant placement by a periodontist or oral surgeon.

3. Titanium implant posts are surgically placed below the gum line, mimicking the missing tooth root.

4. The patient allows several months to heal and give the implant time to fuse with the jawbone.

5. Once the fusion process, known as osseointegration, is completed, patients return to have their full or partial dentures permanently attached to the implant posts.

Understanding the Cost of Dentures

Naturally, you want to know about the financial commitment of dentures before committing to treatment. Unfortunately, pinpointing an exact price without a consultation is near impossible. That’s because each one is 100% customized to the patient. Don’t get discouraged though – there are several all-encompassing factors that do play a role, allowing you to get a better understanding of the cost upfront. To learn what they are, read on!

Factors That Affect the Cost of Dentures

During your initial consultation, our denture dentist will consider:

  • The need for any preliminary treatments, like tooth extractions
  • The number of teeth you’re missing
  • The material your dentures will be made of

From there, they will put together an estimate for you. Just remember that cheaper isn’t always better. Saving some money on the front-end may seem like a good idea, but cheaper materials can make your day-to-day life more difficult and need to be replaced more often. So, it’s better for your smile and your wallet to invest in a quality denture.

Are Implant Dentures More Expensive?

Since implant dentures require oral surgery and the placement of dental implants, they typically do require a larger investment. The good news is that there are several benefits that offset that cost. To begin, implant dentures can last for 15+ years with proper care while traditional alternatives usually last anywhere between five and seven. Furthermore, implant dentures stimulate your jawbone, preventing deterioration and preserving your youthful face shape.

How long will it take to adjust to my new dentures?

The adjustment time for each person varies, as some are previous denture-wearers and others are new to this type of restoration. Fortunately, there are things you can do to make the adjustment phase easier and swifter, such as:

  • Talking slowly to get used to your new denture as well as practicing forming words. You may notice a slight lisp in the beginning but as you work to improve your speech and pronouncing more difficult words, the lisp will begin to disappear, and you will sound just as you did before receiving dentures.
  • Avoid hard foods in the beginning, as these can cause additional soreness. It’s best to stick to soft foods for a while, allowing the feel of wearing dentures to become more normal as you attempt to eat.

Can I sleep in my dentures?

You should avoid sleeping in your dentures if at all possible. They must remain moist, so when you’re asleep, your mouth may become dry and cause your dentures to become brittle. As a result, they are more prone to breakage. Also, your gums and bone need a break from the daily wear, so allowing them to soak in a denture cleaner overnight will ensure your prosthetic is not only clean, but your mouth is able to breathe.

What is the average cost of dentures?

Depending on the type of denture you receive (i.e. traditional full or partial denture, implant-retained denture), the cost will vary. Several factors come into play when determining the cost of treatment, such as:

  • Location of the dental practice
  • Timeline of treatment
  • Difficulty of the treatment
  • Number of dentures you will need (i.e. top, bottom, or both)

Your dental insurance plan will display how much they will agree to pay for dentures. When determining your out of pocket costs, if you need additional assistance in paying for treatment, we are happy to work with Wells Fargo Health Advantage Credit, which will allow you to stay within your budget by making manageable monthly payments.

How Often Do I See My Dentist When Wearing Dentures?

Unless your dentist recommends more frequent visits, you must continue to keep your regular six-month dental checkup and cleaning appointments. It is during these visits we will examine your dentures to ensure there are no cracks, breaks, or fractures, and that they are fitting comfortably within your mouth. Should there be signs of a poor fit or other dental problems, we will recommend the appropriate course of treatment to address these issues.
